“All you need is love” - a phrase so famous, it was a Beatles song.
Love comes up in all my work. In both coaching and speaking gigs, it’s often an unavoidable topic.
But I disagree with the phrase “all you need is love” , especially when it comes to interpersonal relationships.
For a relationship to be strong and healthy, we actually need 5 things: love, investment, trust, honesty, and mutual respect.
We need love to create the emotional connection that keeps us tied and grounded. We need investment to nurture the connection we’ve created and to allow it to grow. We need trust to steel the growth and ensure that it’s safe. We need honesty to protect the trust. And we need mutual respect to ensure we have room to grow on our own and respect the growth of others, while also growing collectively.
It’s a complex puzzle - so why do we simplify it so much? Why boil it down to “all you need is love”?
Perhaps because it’s easier to think that love is something ingrained in us; something we don’t have to think about or create. Or perhaps it’s because it’s scary to think that love is something we must maintain or care for or risk losing.
Love is so wonderful - in all its forms. Parental, platonic, romantic, etc. But you must nurture it and care for it. Tend to all its pillars.
If you find yourself struggling to scaffold the pillars of love in your life, reach out to me for a free consultation. You deserve to feel strong and steady in the love you create and receive - and I would be honored to help you get there.
Much Love,
Dr. Unnatti Jain
