As a parent coach, I often hear things like:
"My son doesn’t talk about his feelings - no matter how hard I try to get him to open up."
"My daughter is so sensitive—it’s just how girls are."
But here’s the truth: a lot of what we assume is “natural” behavior in boys and girls is behavior that is learned and introduced by parents.
Research shows that beginning in infancy, adults speak more about emotions to girls than to boys (Chaplin et al., 2005). Over time, this affects how children develop emotional awareness and express themselves. Boys are often encouraged to be independent, active, and “tough,” while girls are praised for being cooperative, gentle, and nurturing. And while these traits aren’t inherently good or bad, they become harmful when we limit our children’s full expression based on their gender.
The result?
Many boys grow up disconnected from their feelings, while many girls feel responsible for others’ emotions and approval. These patterns can affect relationships, confidence, and mental health well into adulthood.
The good news: brains are adaptable, and it’s never too late to help your kids.
We can start by reflecting on the messages we send. Do we comfort our daughters more quickly than our sons? Do we compliment our sons on achievements and our daughters on appearance or kindness? Do we expect different behaviors from siblings based on gender?
As a coach, I help parents spot these blind spots and replace old habits with new tools:
Teaching emotional regulation to all kids, not just the “sensitive” ones. Allowing both boys and girls to cry, get angry, and feel joy without judgment. Supporting exploration of interests without labeling them “for boys” or “for girls”
Parenting outside of gender stereotypes isn’t about doing it perfectly. It’s about showing up with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to grow alongside your child.
If this resonates with you, I’d love to support your journey.
