Fear: something we all feel, interact with, and know as a feeling, though we may not always name it. I feel it before speaking engagements, sometimes before my coaching sessions (1-2-1, teen, parent, family), and whenever I see a spider!
I could talk about fear all day long - where it comes from, why it exists, why sometimes it’s useful, but today I wanted to share with you all how happiness and fear are often related.
I said that I often feel fear before stepping onto the stage at a speaking event. And I find that whenever I am afraid to speak, I wind up enjoying the event less. And this is true for other parts of my life as well. I was afraid to send my son off to college, so I was less present during his goodbye, and looking back on it I wish I’d been less afraid and more present.
With my clients, I often hear them talk about how their fear of something prevented them from fully enjoying it.
I am not here to tell you that you shouldn’t feel fear; fear is a natural part of life and an emotion that we cannot avoid. But the amount that you engage with or focus on that fear, has a direct impact on your happiness.
My fear of letting my son go impacted my ability to find joy in watching him grow.
My fear of performing well on stage inhibited my jubilation in having an engaged audience.
My client’s fear of trying something new prevents them from enjoying it once they begin to try.
Fear is uncontrollable - but your response to its presence can be changed, and improved.
If you can learn to sit with fear, observe it with an open mind, understand its presence, and approach it in a mindful way, you can increase your happiness exponentially.
Happiness and fear are tied… but maybe this newsletter has shown you that it’s in a different way than you may think.
If you find your happiness being inhibited by fear, or that fear is holding you back from actively seeking happiness, step into discomfort. Try something new to challenge that.
