Letting Go of our Children

As parents, it can be SO difficult to let go of control over our children. They’re our babies; we raised them, nurtured them, and protected them for so long. It can be so challenging to loosen our grip and let them explore the world.

A Mom myself, I was terrified to let go of my child and let him begin exploring the world - I trusted him deeply, but I didn’t trust the world he was entering.

It took everything in me to loosen the reins and let him go.

So how did I do it? How did I let go of him?

I shifted my parenting mindset from one of control to one of connection. Instead of focusing on controlling my son, I focused on how to connect with him and nurture our relationship.

I worked on being present in his life and encouraging his presence in mine, rather than forcing time together.

I let go of the expectations I had of his communication with me and focused on being there for him.

He’s a young man now - and we are closer than ever. There is so much power in letting go of control in favor of connection.

If you’d like to dive into this topic a little deeper I’ve done a TedTalk on it!
