I was in a session with a client this month, talking to them about their mindset when they stopped me mid-sentence and asked, “Unnati, what IS mindset? You talk about it all the time, and I’m honestly not sure what it is.”
This caught me off guard - I’ve been using this word for YEARS, and I wasn’t sure I could describe what it actually is!
My mind started spinning. I was planning on running a workshop with high schoolers in a few weeks about mindset, and I hadn’t thought much about how to define it!
I collected myself, and thought for a moment, before replying to her: “Your mindset is the frame of mind you carry in your day-to-day life. It affects your attitudes, the way you think about and respond to certain situations, and even what may or may not bother you depending on the scenario!”
I felt like I was flying by the seat of my pants when I gave her that answer - but looking back on it, I think it’s accurate.
It was also a nice reminder to me that sometimes I need to go back to basics. I can get caught up in the excitement and vocabulary, and need to slow down and remember my roots.
It feels a bit funny to think about my mindset ABOUT mindset, but that’s metacognition for you - thinking about thinking!
Our brains are so beautiful. How lucky we are to have something so unique to shape and interact with.
