I took some time away from coaching and speaking the week of the 4th of July. And it’s had me thinking ever since… what IS a vacation?
I have a hard time considering my week away a vacation because I didn’t take that time away intentionally, so it doesn’t feel like it was truly restful.
On the other hand, it was time I spent away from work, so maybe it should be called a vacation.
I wrestled with this for days until a colleague of mine said “Unnatti, a vacation is what you make it. It’s not about where you go or what you do - it’s about how you feel!”
That really resonated with me - and in that context, I don’t think I would call the week of the 4th a vacation for me. But it has inspired me to take a “mini vacation” this weekend, here at home, where I step away from work, take the time to relax intentionally, and maybe treat myself to something I normally wouldn’t.
A vacation isn’t a place or activity… it’s a state of mind.
