I was speaking with one of the organizers at a college earlier this month when we were coordinating for my speaking event, and she asked me why I have chosen to focus so much of my time and energy as both a coach and a speaker, on younger populations. Much of my work has been about Generation Z, whether it be speaking to them directly, speaking to the places that employ them, teach them, lead them, or working with their parents to cultivate better family dynamics.
My standard answer is that they’re sorely undervalued - which I believe to be true - but I wanted to share with my LinkedIn community, that answer but in more depth.
Gen Z makes up around 20% of the current US population - and for the last few years, and the next coming years, they’ll be entering the current workforce. They are also the most diverse and well-educated generation ever, and we are already beginning to see the seeds of change they’re planting, as they move up in the world.
It’s clear that Gen Z has so much value to offer, and that should be seen an appreciated. But why would I spend so much time supporting them and working with the people who work with Gen Z if they’re seemingly just fine?
Gen Z is also the generation with the most mental health issues and has faced more adversity than any generation except the silent generation (who were adults during the great depression).
Our Gen Zers were born into a society that would very shortly witness extreme social and political change following 9/11, and then grow up on a globe dripping with war.
They’ve witnessed a huge economic collapse and recession.
Lived through a global pandemic.
And entered the workforce during yet another economic crisis, and with inflation rates, housing prices, and rent, higher than are truly livable.
Over half of Gen Z reports having had at least one depressive episode - and when you look at what they’re dealing with so young, it’s no secret as to why.
That’s why I work with our youth and Gen Z - I don’t want them to lose sight of their value amongst all the other garbage. They have so much to offer, and I refuse to let them lose sight of that.
What do you think of Gen Z? Are you close to anyone from that generation?
I’d love to hear your thoughts - please share them down below!
