It is just about an impossible time to enter the workforce - and if you’re Gen Z (1997-2012 babies, I’m looking at you!), this is the turbulence you’ve been dealing with for years. It comes up in my coaching work all the time - and I’ve even given speeches about it!
The job market is very turbulent right now - between sociopolitical turbulence, our country’s challenging economic standing, and a job market that is increasingly demanding more and more from new hires, Gen Z has had it rough. Combine that with the cost of higher education, and it’s no walk in the park.
So, how has Gen Z been handling it? If you ask my own Gen Z son, he’ll tell you not well - it’s been a lot of stress, uncertainty, and feeling unmoored. I asked my son if he thought life coaching would help folks (of course, I had my own thoughts about the answer to the question before he asked,) and he said yes - but I was surprised at his reasoning why.
“So much of what I see people struggling with is a lack of confidence, which makes dealing with that uncertainty so much more challenging. I often wonder if people would be feeling better if they were confident in themselves in the face of the turmoil”.
I wholeheartedly agree with him - though life coaching cannot solve the challenges of the job market, it can help people develop and bolster their self-confidence, increase their ability to land future jobs, and flesh out interpersonal and relational skills. Sure, these things don’t guarantee you a job offer or career success - but research has proven that people with these traits are far more likely to have those things!
It can be challenging to reach out for help, especially for Gen Z, who is not only facing turmoil but has also been discouraged from seeking help in adulthood, and is expected to pull up their bootstraps and get things done on their own.
You can be an independent, self-sufficient person who also seeks help with your personal growth and development, should they need it. Don’t believe me? Schedule a free conversation with me. Let’s talk about it.
